Trustpilot scores were read the same day. SE Ranking, Semrush, Mangools and Surfer showed us euros, so their dollar prices come from vendor FAQ and partner pages or archived copies dated 1–6 October 2026. Writesonic’s monthly prices come from its affiliate page. Scalenut lists its entry plan at $59 a month, shown with a long-running 60% promo price of $24; we treat $59 as the list price.

What AI actually changes in SEO tools
Most of what sets AI SEO tools apart arrived in 2025: Semrush launched its AI toolkit on 4 March, Ahrefs added Brand Radar that month, and NeuronWriter published its AI Visibility page in November. The features do four jobs.
- Tracking AI answers. The tool runs your prompts through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI features and records whether your brand is named or cited. Writesonic says “We crawl the web interface like a buyer would”; SE Ranking also reads the interface, not an API.
- AI Overviews in rank tracking. Ahrefs’ Rank Tracker records 19 SERP features, AI Overviews included; Semrush tracks AI Overviews on every plan, free included. SE Ranking says Google “doesn’t have plans to show clicks for AI Overviews” in Search Console, so it estimates the potential traffic.
- Writing and briefs. SE Ranking’s AI Writer drafts whole articles with FAQs and meta tags, and Ahrefs sells AI Content Helper at $99 a month for 50 documents.
- AI crawlers and assistants. On Semrush One plans, Site Audit flags whether you block bots such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Tools also connect to AI assistants through MCP: Surfer’s beta, opened in August 2026, serves “any MCP-compatible AI agent (Claude, ChatGPT, and others)”.
The numbers are not comparable between tools. Refresh rates run from daily to weekly, engine lists differ, and Mangools checks every prompt twice per update to catch unstable answers.
AI engines on the plan we compare for each tool (AIO = Google AI Overviews):
| Tool and plan | AI engines tracked | Prompts | Refresh |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE Ranking Core | AIO, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini (Perplexity is tracked in SE Visible, a separate product) | 100 | Daily |
| Writesonic Starter | ChatGPT, Gemini, AIO | 50 | Daily |
| NeuronWriter Bronze | AIO, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity* | 5 | Every 24–48 hours |
| Mangools SEO + AI Basic | ChatGPT, AIO, AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Mistral, Llama | 500 | Weekly |
| Frase Starter | ChatGPT, Google AI | 50 | Not stated |
| Scalenut Starter | ChatGPT, AIO | 10 | Weekly |
| Semrush One Starter | AIO, AI Mode, ChatGPT; reports add Perplexity, Gemini | 50 | Daily |
| Ahrefs Lite | AIO, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude | 5 | Daily |
| Moz Pro Standard | GPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity | 150 | Weekly |
| Surfer AI Search Analytics | ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode, AIO, Gemini | 50 | Daily |
| Clearscope Essentials | ChatGPT, Gemini | 50 queries | Not stated |
*NeuronWriter lists these engines for its AI Visibility module; its pricing page does not say which come with each plan.

All-in-one SEO suites with AI tracking
These five cover keyword research, rank tracking and backlinks, and each adds some AI answer tracking. They differ most in price, refresh rate and refund terms.
SE Ranking: our pick for most small businesses
SE Ranking sells Core as “SEO + GEO for marketing teams”. It costs $129 a month, or $103.20 a month billed yearly, with the year charged up front. Core tracks 2,000 keywords and 100 AI prompts daily across 10 projects, audits 250,000 pages a month and includes 25 content-editor articles. Local SEO covers 3 locations, with Google Business Profile posts. The 14-day trial needs no card but is smaller: 750 keywords and 20 AI prompts a day.
The catches: “Payments are non-refundable,” says the pricing page, unless the service was not delivered as promised. The entry price nearly doubled in 2026, from $65 for Essential in January to $129 for Core by late February. In a June 2026 one-star Trustpilot review, a customer says SE Ranking moved them to a pricier plan without consent. Core includes 1 manager seat and 6 months of history. Trustpilot overall: 4.2 from 712 reviews, 83% five-star.
Good fit: a small business that wants rankings, audits, local listings and AI answers on one bill. Poor fit: agencies needing client guest links (Growth, $279) and anyone who wants a refund window.

Mangools: keyword research on a small budget
Mangools bundles KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner, SiteProfiler and AI Search Watcher, sold only together; there is no site audit tool. SEO-only Basic costs $49 a month or $358.80 a year, about $29.90 a month. The pricing page opens on the SEO + AI bundle instead: $61 a month or $452.40 a year, about $37.70.
Basic allows 100 keyword lookups per 24 hours and 200 tracked keywords, updated weekly; daily updates need Agency. AI Search Watcher covers eight AI systems, from ChatGPT to Claude and Llama: 500 prompts in the bundle, 5 in SEO-only plans. Instead of a trial, a free plan gives 5 lookups per 24 hours without a card. Mangools refunds “within 48 hours of your payment”, and plans renew automatically. Trustpilot: 4.5 from 167 reviews.
Good fit: bloggers and freelancers who mostly research keywords. Poor fit: technical SEO, or daily rank tracking on a small plan.

Semrush: SEO plus AI tracking from $199
Semrush, owned by Adobe since 28 April 2026, has a new plan line-up. The SEO plan costs $139.95 a month ($117.33 billed yearly) for 5 sites and 500 keywords tracked daily, with “no dedicated prompt-tracking quota”. Suite plans with AI answer tracking start with Semrush One Starter at $199 ($165.17 yearly) and 50 prompts a day; Pro+ costs $299 and Advanced $549. The AI Visibility Toolkit alone is $99 a month for 25 prompts, with no trial.
Semrush counts 28.8 billion keywords and over 43 trillion backlinks. Its billing is strict: the 7-day trial needs a card and works once per account; a second attempt buys a monthly plan. The refund policy says “refunds are not available for month-to-month subscriptions”, and the 7-day guarantee covers first yearly purchases and add-ons only. Trustpilot: 1.7 from 1,411 reviews, 44% one-star.
Good fit: agencies and in-house teams that use several toolkits daily. Poor fit: a small site paying monthly. See Semrush pricing.
Ahrefs: link data, no trial, no discounts
Ahrefs Lite costs $129 a month; a year costs $1,290, the price of 10 months, or $107.50 a month. Lite tracks 750 keywords across 5 projects and includes 5 AI prompts; the pricing page shows weekly rank updates on every plan. Starter, at $29 a month, is still sold with 200 credits and monthly billing only.
For AI search, Brand Radar costs extra: the AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month, custom prompt packs at $50. The pricing FAQ is blunt: “We never run discounts”, there is no trial, and “Ahrefs does not issue refunds in general”; an unused monthly plan may qualify. Pay-as-you-go credits, if switched on, are charged automatically. Trustpilot: 2.2 from 323 reviews, half of them one-star.
Good fit: link building and competitor research. Poor fit: anyone who wants to try first; Ahrefs Free is covered below. See Ahrefs pricing.
Moz Pro: weekly AI tracking from $79
Moz Pro Starter costs $49 a month for one website. Standard costs $99, or $79 billed yearly ($950 for the first year), for 3 sites and 300 keywords with weekly rankings. The AI allowance is large: 150 prompts tracked weekly in 4 AI models, AI Overviews by keyword and 2 AI content briefs a month. Keyword research is tight at 150 queries a month.
Moz “does not offer refunds of any kind”. The free trial covers only Medium on monthly billing, needs a card and converts to paid automatically; the pricing page does not state its length. Yearly prices say “billed for your first year”, with no renewal price shown. Trustpilot: 2.4 from 242 reviews.
Good fit: teams that report Domain Authority (DA), Moz’s 1–100 score, and want cheap weekly AI tracking. Poor fit: heavy keyword research. See Moz Pro pricing.
For AI search visibility: Writesonic and trackers
Writesonic: an AI visibility platform with a writer
Writesonic now calls itself “The AI Search Growth Engine”. Starter costs $99 a month billed monthly (Writesonic’s affiliate page) or $79 a month billed yearly (pricing page, 7 October 2026), and tracks ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews with 50 prompts a day. It adds 15 AI articles and 10 site audits of 100 pages each a month, for 1 user and 1 project. Basic ($249, or $199 yearly) doubles prompts to 100 and adds a second user.
The “8 AI platforms” on the homepage are an Enterprise feature; self-serve plans track three. In October 2025, AI tracking started on the $249 Professional plan; now every plan has it. The trial runs 7 days without a card, and Writesonic refunds a first payment if you email within 7 days.
Plans renew automatically. Trustpilot shows 4.6 from 5,764 reviews, though most 2026 one-star reviews we read concern billing, cancellations and renewals. Our Writesonic review covers each plan.
Good fit: brands whose first question is whether ChatGPT and Google’s AI recommend them. Poor fit: teams whose main reports are rankings and backlinks.

Trackers sold on their own
For tracking only, there are standalone trackers (no affiliate links here). Otterly Lite costs $29 a month ($25 billed yearly) for 15 prompts in ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, refreshed daily. SE Visible, SE Ranking’s separate GEO platform, starts at $99 ($79 yearly) for 200 prompts, with a 10-day trial.
AI content optimization tools
These AI tools for SEO content plan, write and score articles. All five also sell AI answer tracking; Surfer leaves it out of its entry plan.
NeuronWriter: AI visibility in a $19 content tool
NeuronWriter calls itself an “agentic content optimization and AI visibility platform”. Bronze costs $23 a month, or $19 billed yearly, for 2 projects, 25 content analyses, 15,000 AI credits and 5 AI-monitored questions. Its AI Visibility module follows Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity, re-checking “typically every 24–48 hours”, and an AI Readiness audit checks whether bots such as GPTBot can read your site.
Search Console integration and MCP start on Gold ($69, or $57 yearly). The 7-day trial runs on Gold terms without a card and charges nothing when it ends, and you can ask for a refund of your first plan within 30 days. Trustpilot shows 4.5 from 68 reviews, below the 4.8 that NeuronWriter’s footer cites, dated July 2026.
Good fit: bloggers and small sites that want content scoring and a first look at AI answers for under $25 a month. Poor fit: teams that need Search Console data on the cheapest plan.

Frase: briefs, AI drafts and a hard cap on Starter
Frase calls itself “The content operating system for AI search”. Starter costs $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for 1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles, 50 audit pages and 50 AI prompts tracked in ChatGPT and Google AI. Frase says Starter stops at the limit, “so a surprise charge never happens”; higher plans bill overage only if you switch it on. Content Guard watches 10 pages for falling rankings and proposes fixes.
The trial needs no card and is capped at 5 articles and 25 AI prompts. After that, payments are final: the terms say “we do not provide any refunds”, though the January 2026 pricing page promised a 7-day money-back guarantee. Contracts renew unless you give notice 30 days before the term ends. Trustpilot: 3.8 from 64 reviews, 36% one-star, including complaints from lifetime-deal owners.
Good fit: writers who want briefs, drafts and AI tracking for under $50. Poor fit: anyone who wants a refund safety net. Our Frase review breaks down every plan.

Scalenut: GEO articles with weekly tracking
Scalenut says every plan includes its “core AI visibility system”. Starter lists at $59 a month for 10 prompts refreshed weekly in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, 1 domain and 5 GEO articles a month; Plus is $89 for 25 prompts. The page also shows a 60%-off “Limited Offer” at $24 a month. A similar deal ran in July 2025, so we treat $59 as the list price; the sale FAQ adds that deals are not refundable.
Its Cruise Mode writer promises “1500+ word blogs in <5 minutes”. Plans come with a 7-day trial, and “Scalenut doesn’t offer refund post the trial period”. Trustpilot: 3.2 from 159 reviews, none in the last 12 months; a February 2024 review says the customer was billed for a full year without any notice.
Good fit: small teams that want GEO-style articles plus basic tracking. Poor fit: anyone who needs daily AI data, which is a paid upgrade. More in our Scalenut review.

Surfer: content editor, AI tracking costs extra
Surfer pitches content that “ranks on Google and gets cited by AI search engines”. Its plans changed in early 2026. Discovery costs $59 a month or $49 billed yearly for 10 documents a month (120 a year on yearly billing) and 10 tracked pages, with no AI prompts. Standard ($119, or $99 yearly) adds 25 ChatGPT prompts refreshed weekly and 360 documents a year (30 a month). A separate AI Search Analytics plan tracks 50 prompts daily in five engines for $95, or $82 yearly.
The trial takes a card at signup and becomes the paid plan after 7 days; a prepaid yearly plan is not refundable. Legacy subscribers moved to the new plans on 18 May 2026 and lost old discounts. Trustpilot shows 4.2 from 221 reviews; the badge on Surfer’s site says 4.6.
Good fit: teams that write a lot. Poor fit: buyers who want AI tracking on the entry plan. Compare it with Frase and Scalenut in our three-way comparison or see Surfer pricing.
Clearscope: unlimited users, monthly price only
Clearscope wants your content “Discovered on Google, ChatGPT, and What’s Next”. Essentials costs $129 a month for 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts a month, with unlimited users. Query tracking covers ChatGPT and Gemini only. The price fell from $189 in July 2025 to $129 by January 2026. The trial lasts 14 days. Monthly plans have “no minimum contract” and can be cancelled anytime, says the pricing page; the terms still renew subscriptions unless you give 30 days’ notice.
The pricing page shows monthly prices; yearly billing is for custom plans. Clearscope’s Trustpilot page has no reviews yet. Good fit: content teams with many writers. Poor fit: a solo blogger. See Clearscope pricing.
Free AI SEO tools worth using
Free plans are small, but together they cover the basics of AI tools for SEO.
- Google Search Console: free clicks, impressions and indexing data for Google Search. Google suggests checking it “around once every month” and emails you about new issues.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: since February 2026, an AI Performance report (public preview) counts how often Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries cite your pages; the query data is a sample.
- Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools: no card, no time limit. Verify your site to get Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per project a month, 1,000 backlinks or keywords at once and 1 AI Content Helper document a month.
- Semrush Free: 10 reports a day, one website and 10 tracked keywords, plus a basic check of AI mentions and citations and an AI-readiness audit of 100 pages.
- Mangools: 5 keyword lookups per 24 hours, and a free AI Search Grader that scores brand visibility from 0 to 100 across ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Claude, Gemini, Mistral and Llama.
- SE Ranking: a free AI visibility checker with 5 checks a day for your domain and up to 5 competitors.
- Moz: a free community account gets 10 Link Explorer queries a month.
How to choose an AI SEO tool by budget
With AI SEO software, price the plan you will still pay for in month three, not the trial. Then read the refund terms: they range from 30 days to none at all.
- $0: Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for your own data, plus one free plan above for keyword or AI checks.
- Up to $50 a month: NeuronWriter Bronze ($23, or $19 yearly) if you publish articles; Mangools Basic, SEO only ($49, or $29.90 yearly), for keyword research; Frase Starter ($49, or $39 yearly) for briefs plus 50 tracked prompts.
- Up to $150 a month: SE Ranking Core ($129) as one tool for SEO and AI tracking; Writesonic Starter ($99) if AI answers matter more than rankings; Ahrefs Lite ($129) for links, with only 5 AI prompts; Moz Pro Standard ($99) for 150 weekly prompts.
- Agencies: SE Ranking Growth, $279 a month ($223.20 yearly), covers 30 projects, 3 seats, 5,000 keywords and 250 prompts a day, with client guest links; white-label reports cost $69 a month more, yearly only. Writesonic’s Agency Starter shows $200 a month with the page’s default Annual setting, for 20 short pitch projects. Semrush Pro+ costs $299 for 15 sites, 1,500 keywords and 100 prompts a day.
If two tools tie, pick the trial you can actually use. SE Ranking, Writesonic, NeuronWriter and Frase start without a card; Semrush, Moz and Surfer take a card first, and Ahrefs has no trial.
Is SEO still worth it with AI?
Yes. Google’s documentation states: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” Google asks for no separate AI work beyond normal SEO.
Classic results still carry local search. In Whitespark’s May 2025 study of 540 queries in three US cities, AI Overviews appeared on 15% of purely local searches, while the local pack showed more than 90% of the time. Informational searches differed: 92% showed an AI Overview, as did 97% of hybrid searches such as “average cost of dental implants in Phoenix”.
People also ask AI directly. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults, 45% used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier, and Google’s share as a review source fell from 83% to 71%.
So keep the SEO work and add a view of AI answers, through one tool that does both or Search Console plus the free checkers above.
How we checked, and what we did not
We did not use these 11 AI SEO tools in our own accounts for this guide, so there are no screenshots or scores of our own here. On 7 October 2026 we read each vendor’s pricing page, terms, refund policy and help articles, and each Trustpilot profile. We don’t quote G2: we could not open its pages directly.
Not checked: the quality of AI drafts, the accuracy of each tracker’s data, the engines on NeuronWriter’s Bronze plan, the length of Moz’s trial and Scalenut’s yearly price. Left out: Ubersuggest, whose cheapest plan checks 10 AI prompts once a month and keeps Gemini and AI Overviews data for Enterprise. SpyFu’s Basic plan lacks AI brand monitoring, Jasper keeps GEO agents for its custom-priced Business plan, and we could not find MarketMuse’s prices on its pricing page.
We may earn a commission through the SE Ranking, Writesonic, NeuronWriter, Mangools, Frase and Scalenut buttons; links to Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz, Surfer and Clearscope are not affiliate links. Every tool gets the same checks: price, limits, AI coverage, refunds and Trustpilot. Our review method and editorial policy explain more.
FAQ
It depends on the job. For one tool that covers rankings, audits and AI answers, SE Ranking Core tracks 2,000 keywords and 100 AI prompts a day for $129 a month. For AI search alone, Writesonic Starter tracks ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews. For writing, NeuronWriter starts at $23 a month and Frase at $49.
Partly. AI writers draft whole articles, and Frase’s Content Guard spots pages that lose rank and proposes a fix, but republishes only “on your approval”. Output still needs an editor: a September 2025 one-star NeuronWriter review on Trustpilot calls its AI posts superficial and missing references. Use AI for drafts and checks; keep a person on the facts.
Not separately in Google’s tools. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted inside the ordinary “Web” search type in Search Console. SE Ranking’s AI Overviews tracker estimates the potential traffic instead. On the Microsoft side, Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026 that counts how often Copilot cites your pages.
Of the 11 here, NeuronWriter Bronze: $23 a month, or $19 billed yearly, with 5 AI-monitored questions. Its AI Visibility module covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity, but the pricing page does not list engines per plan. For volume, Mangools’ SEO + AI bundle tracks 500 prompts a week for $61 a month. Among standalone trackers, Otterly Lite costs $29 a month for 15 prompts.
Few, and the windows are short. NeuronWriter refunds a first plan within 30 days, Writesonic a first payment within 7 days, and Mangools within 48 hours. Semrush refunds only first yearly plans and first add-ons, within 7 days. SE Ranking refunds only if the service was not delivered as promised, Moz and Frase never do, and Ahrefs “does not issue refunds in general”.
Not for a small site that mainly needs rankings, audits and AI tracking. SE Ranking Core covers those for $129 a month with 100 AI prompts a day, while Semrush’s SEO-plus-AI plans start at $199 with 50 prompts and Ahrefs Lite includes 5. Choose them for depth: Semrush lists 28.8 billion keywords against SE Ranking’s 5.4 billion.
