Surfer SEO is a content editor with an AI writer, a content audit and a tracker for AI answers. Plans start at $49 a month billed yearly, and that buys 120 documents a year, or 10 a month.

Verdict: 3.3/5 (output quality not scored). Worth it for content teams that fill Standard’s 30 documents a month: that is $3.30 a document on yearly billing, with three seats and Google Docs and WordPress integrations. Skip it if you write alone, need backlink data or deep technical SEO, or want Claude tracked. NeuronWriter’s entry plan costs $0.77 a document.

What the tool does in 2026, and what it leaves out

Surfer sums up its job as helping you “Create content that ranks on Google and gets cited by AI search engines”. Behind that line sit four tools, though not every plan gets all four.

  • Content Editor. You enter a keyword, and the editor builds guidelines from pages that rank for it. Since 4 May 2026 its Content Score shows “your SEO and AI Search performance side by side”, and Auto-Optimize edits for both.
  • Surfer AI. The writer drafts a full article in the editor in “approximately 20 minutes”, though the same help article says to “Allow up to 30 minutes”. Drafts run to at least about 2,000 words, and the length can’t be set.
  • Content Audit. It reads your Google Search Console data daily, shows the last 30 days and flags ranking drops and pages worth refreshing.
  • AI Tracker. It checks how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode answer the prompts you choose.

Pro adds a Topical Map, one-click internal linking and an MCP connection for AI agents, out of beta since 5 October 2026. Among self-serve plans, only Peace of Mind gets the API.

Three things are missing, and Surfer says so itself. Its co-founder’s comparison with Ahrefs, dated 21 July 2025, admits the product “doesn’t offer backlink features”, has no ad data (“we don’t have plans for implementing it”) and treats keyword discovery as “lighter by design”. Rank tracking is an add-on from $8.50 per 100 keywords a month.

The company was founded in 2017 and is registered in Wrocław, Poland; the French group Positive bought it in October 2025, Search Engine Journal reported. On languages, the pricing FAQ says the tool “works with all languages”, but the AI writer covers 18.

Surfer SEO pricing in 2026: plans, prices and limits

There are five self-serve plans and a custom Enterprise tier. The pricing page opens with yearly billing preselected, so its big figures are monthly equivalents of a charge paid upfront for the year. From the EU it shows the same numbers in euros, and buyers in the EU and UK pay VAT on top unless they add a valid VAT ID.

Prices checked on 21 October 2026 on the vendor’s pricing page and help center (USD, matching a US copy of the page archived on 20 October 2026).

Integrations mean WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful and Zapier. The tracker-only AI Search Analytics plan has no editor: 50 prompts checked daily cost $95 a month or $82 billed yearly, 100 prompts $185 or $158, and 200 prompts $365 or $308. On Pro, extra prompts cost $51 a month for 100 in total, $409 for 250 or $829 for 500.

How the plans changed in 2025 and 2026

In October 2025 the cheapest plan was Essential at $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, with “30 articles/mo” plus 5 AI articles. Scale cost $219, or $175 billed yearly, for “100 articles/mo”. The current grid was in place by 4 February 2026.

So the $219 a month that once bought 100 articles a month on Scale now buys Pro with 30. Older subscriptions moved to the new plans on 18 May 2026, and the help center warned that each price could “remain the same”, “go down” or “increase”. Monthly payers whose price rose noticeably got a 6-month transition discount; coupons stopped working, except lifetime discounts.

120 documents a year, not a month: how the allowance works

The plan cards say “Create or Optimize 120 Documents” for Discovery and 360 for Standard and Pro, with no period attached. Read as a monthly figure, Discovery would look twelve times bigger than it is. Four sources on Surfer’s own site point to a yearly pool.

  1. The page’s script stores each number as a yearly count and, on monthly billing, prints “Math.round(y / 12)”: 10 documents on Discovery, 30 on Standard or Pro (code read on 21 October 2026).
  2. The pricing FAQ: on an annual plan, “Your credits reset yearly or after changing your plan”.
  3. The help center (16 October 2026): annual plans get “all your limit pools for the entire year in a single upfront batch”.
  4. The January 2025 pricing page printed both figures for one plan: “30 articles/mo” and “360 articles/yr”.

Here is what follows from that.

  • Yearly plans absorb busy months. Publish 15 articles a month on yearly Discovery and the pool runs out after 8 months; leftovers expire with the subscription year.
  • Monthly plans reset: “Unused limits do not roll over to the next month”.
  • AI drafts count. The old AI credits were merged into the Content Editor limit, so a generated article uses a document just like a hand-written one.
  • Upgrades restart the pool and the billing date, while downgrades wait for the end of the billing period.
  • Audit pages, tracked prompts, custom voices and templates stay the same “regardless of your billing cycle”.
  • “Unlimited” has a ceiling: under the fair usage policy (15 October 2026), Peace of Mind gets 500 documents a month, or 6,000 a year.

AI Tracker: five engines, no Claude, and prompts by plan

The tracker sends the prompts you pick to AI engines and records whether your brand is mentioned, which sources are cited and how the answer frames you. Its FAQ is specific: “Currently we support: Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity”. Claude is missing, although the site header lists it next to ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Tracking depends on the plan.

  • Discovery: none; the plan table reads “Track 0 AI prompts”.
  • Standard: 25 prompts, ChatGPT only, refreshed weekly.
  • Pro: 50 prompts across all five engines, refreshed daily.
  • Peace of Mind: 100 prompts daily; Enterprise gets a custom quota.
  • AI Search Analytics: 50 prompts daily without the editor.

Surfer says it scrapes the live chat interfaces instead of calling APIs and runs “multiple queries per day per model, then average the results”. In 2026 it also made the tracker a place to buy links: a Backlink Marketplace for “paid placements” (21 January) and suggestions that include “buying a mention” (5 October).

If Claude or Grok matter to you, look elsewhere. Mangools’ AI Search Watcher covers eight systems, both included, and checks 500 prompts weekly in its SEO + AI plans from $37.70 a month billed yearly. Frase adds Claude and Gemini on its $239 Scale plan. Our guide to AI visibility trackers compares the rest.

Surfer SEO AI Humanizer: what it is and how many words you get

The Surfer SEO humanizer rewrites AI-generated text in a more natural style. The tool’s FAQ defines it like this: “An AI humanizer tool changes AI-created content to look more like it was written by a person”. The Discovery card pairs it with Surfy, the AI assistant, and the plan table lists “AI Detector & Humanizer” on every plan.

  • Free web version: up to 500 words without an account, 1,000 with a free one.
  • Paid plans: “now included in plans with AI features with a 50,000 words/month limit”, or 600,000 words a year on annual plans.
  • Language: English only; the tool page says it can “support only the English language as of today”.
  • History: on the old plans it was a separate add-on, folded in by the May 2026 migration.
  • Detector: a free AI Detector page sits alongside it, and paid plans add “Unlimited AI detection”.

We don’t score the Humanizer, because we have no account to try it in. Treat it as an editing pass for tone: a rewrite can shift meaning, so re-check figures, names and quotes before publishing.

Cost per document against NeuronWriter and Frase

The three tools meter writing differently: Surfer counts documents, Frase counts articles, and NeuronWriter, whose page said “content writer analyses” on 7 October, now says documents too. Each unit is roughly one article, so price divided by allowance is a fair first comparison.

Checked on 21 October 2026 on each vendor’s pricing page. USD, per month on yearly billing unless noted; per-document figures are our arithmetic.

NeuronWriter bills a year as ten months ($230 for Bronze). Its Bronze and Silver plans share documents read-only, and unlimited team members start on Gold. Frase’s Starter stops at its limits instead of billing overage.

Cost per document, billed yearly (USD). Price per month on yearly billing divided by documents or articles a month. Checked 21 Oct 2026
Pro costs the most per document, $6.07: it has Standard’s 30 documents a month plus daily tracking in five AI engines, five seats and 200 audit pages. NeuronWriter Bronze costs about a sixth of Discovery per document, and Peace of Mind falls to $0.60 at its fair-use cap of 500 a month.

Where it wins: Google Docs, WordPress, Contentful and Zapier integrations from Standard, daily tracking in five AI engines on Pro, ten seats and an API on Peace of Mind, and yearly pools that absorb a busy quarter.

Where it loses: price per document at the entry level, no free plan, no refund window and no Claude in the tracker. Its AI writer covers 18 languages, while Frase says it can “Write natively in 70+ languages, never translated”. Trial, refunds and cancellation: the billing fine print

  1. The trial takes a card and converts. New accounts get 7 days of Pro, and the help article is blunt: “After 7 days, your subscription automatically converts to the plan you selected at checkout, and your card is charged for the first billing period”. Cards used on an earlier account don’t qualify.
  2. Canceling the trial ends the account when the 7 days run out. You keep access until then; after that “your account will expire, and you will lose access to any stored data”. Copy out drafts you want to keep first.
  3. No refund guarantee since late 2025. In October 2025 the pricing page promised a “7-day Money Back Guarantee” for first monthly subscriptions; archived copies from 2 November 2025 on, and the live page, don’t mention refunds.
  4. A prepaid year is not refundable. Section 3 of the regulations lets you ask support to recalculate the fee “proportionally to the higher of” months started or limits used, and refunds the difference only “If the request is accepted”. Cancel a $588 Discovery year after 3 months with 60 of 120 documents used, and at most $294 comes back.
  5. EU consumers lose the 14-day withdrawal right once the service starts with their consent (section 7).
  6. No pause: “The only way to stop a renewal is to cancel it entirely”. Returning customers get “the current pricing plans available at the time of your return”.
  7. Payment: cards for monthly and yearly plans, bank transfer for yearly only, and “We do not support PayPal payments at the moment”.

Surfer SEO reviews: Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra in October 2026

On 21 October 2026, Trustpilot showed a TrustScore of 4.2 (“Great”) from 223 reviews: 75% five stars, 8% one star. Trustpilot also notes “No recent history of asking for reviews”. The footer badge on Surfer’s site that links to this profile reads “4.6/5 200+ Reviews”.

Software marketplaces are kinder. An archived G2 page from 17 October 2026 shows 4.8 from 546 reviews, 485 of them five stars, and an archived Capterra page showed 4.9 from 422 on 6 October. G2’s pros and cons, generated from user reviews, list “Content Creation (9)” and “Ease of Use (7)” against “High Pricing (4)” and “Credit Issues (4)”.

Surfer SEO ratings: share by stars. Trustpilot 4.2 from 223 reviews (21 Oct 2026); G2 4.8 from 546 reviews (archived 17 Oct 2026)
One in eight Trustpilot ratings is one or two stars (13%), against 6 of 546 on G2 (1.1%). Five-star shares are 75% on Trustpilot and 89% on G2.

On Trustpilot, complaints center on price and billing.

  • Price rises. A reviewer from Germany (2 stars, October 2026) quit after years, under the heading “From €66 to over €230”. A US reviewer (2 stars, 15 December 2025): “The issue is their pricing”.
  • Credits. A UK customer (2 stars, updated 20 May 2026) reported a dispute over a large balance of unused AI writing credits.
  • Value. A 1-star review from 23 September 2026 sums it up as “Overbilling, Overcharging, Expensive, Not relevant today”; a reviewer in Spain (1 star, 30 December 2025) wrote “There are many other options now that are cheaper”.

Praise goes to the editor. A 5-star review from 9 February 2026 calls “The Content Editor” the standout, saying it “makes it much easier to structure content, identify gaps”. A long-time user (5 stars, 18 December 2025) credits the tool with helping “to radically improve my internal linking”.

Who it pays off for, and who should skip it

A good fit:

  • Content teams publishing close to 30 articles a month in Google Docs, WordPress or Contentful: Standard covers three seats and 30 documents a month for $99 billed yearly, and Pro raises the seats to five.
  • Marketing teams that report on AI visibility: Pro checks 50 prompts a day across Google’s AI features, ChatGPT and Perplexity.
  • Agencies with steady volume: at 100 documents a month, Peace of Mind costs $2.99 each, with ten seats and the API.
  • Teams writing in the 18 languages the AI writer supports.

Look elsewhere if:

  • You write alone and publish fewer than 10 articles a month. Discovery has no Keyword Research, integrations or AI tracking, and NeuronWriter Bronze costs $19.17 a month billed yearly.
  • You need backlinks, ad data or deep technical SEO, where Surfer admits Ahrefs “still leads”. See what Ahrefs adds next to a content editor, or SE Ranking, whose Core plan listed 2,000 tracked keywords and 250,000 audit pages a month on 5 October 2026.
  • You need Claude, Grok or Llama in your AI tracking.
  • You want a card-free trial or a refund window: NeuronWriter refunds a first plan within 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Surfer SEO cost in 2026?

Discovery costs $59 a month, or $49 billed yearly. Standard is $119 or $99, Pro $219 or $182, and Peace of Mind $359 or $299. AI Search Analytics, the tracker alone, is $95 or $82, and Enterprise is quoted on request. Prices are in US dollars as of 21 October 2026; EU and UK buyers add VAT unless they have a valid VAT ID.

Are the 120 documents per month or per year?

Per year. The pricing page shows yearly pools by default, and its script divides them by 12 for monthly billing, so Discovery means 10 documents a month and Standard or Pro 30. On a yearly plan the pool arrives at once, and anything unused expires when the subscription year ends.

Does Surfer SEO have a free plan or free trial?

There is no free plan. New accounts get 7 days of Pro, but checkout asks for a card and the trial becomes a paid plan unless you cancel in time. If you cancel, you keep access until day 7, then the account and its stored data expire. Some web tools stay free, such as the Humanizer for up to 500 words.

Can I get a refund?

Not by default. The 7-day money-back guarantee shown in October 2025 is gone. A prepaid year is not refundable, though support may recalculate the fee by months started or limits used, whichever is higher. EU consumers lose the 14-day withdrawal right once the service has started with their consent.

Does the AI Tracker cover Claude?

No. On 21 October 2026 it covered ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, although the site header names Claude. Standard tracks 25 prompts in ChatGPT alone, weekly; Pro tracks 50 daily in all five. Mangools’ AI Search Watcher and Frase’s Scale plan both list Claude.

Does it include backlink and keyword tools?

No backlink data: the vendor’s own Ahrefs comparison says it “doesn’t offer backlink features”, and the 2026 Backlink Marketplace is for buying placements, not analyzing links. Keyword Research starts on Standard and is “lighter by design”, and rank tracking is an add-on from $8.50 per 100 keywords a month. If links matter, pair the editor with a data suite such as Ahrefs or SE Ranking.

Is Surfer SEO worth it in 2026?

For a content team writing about 30 articles a month in Google Docs or WordPress, yes: Standard comes to $3.30 per document with yearly billing. For a solo writer it is a harder sell, since Discovery’s $4.90 per document is about six times NeuronWriter Bronze. With no refund window, treat the 7-day trial as your test.
