Surfer SEO Alternatives 2026: 7 Tools Compared by Cost per Document, Trial and Refund
Surfer’s cheapest plan, Discovery, costs $49 a month billed yearly for 120 documents a year, about $4.90 each, with no AI-answer tracking and no money-back guarantee. Here are seven alternatives, compared on the same terms.
Quick verdict: Frase Starter is the closest swap: $39 a month, billed yearly, for 10 articles and 50 daily AI prompts, but it refunds nothing; use the 7-day trial. NeuronWriter has the cheapest entry plan per optimized document, about $0.77. SE Ranking Core adds backlinks and rank tracking. Stay with Surfer if you write about 500 documents a month.

Why people look for a Surfer SEO alternative
Surfer, owned by the French group Positive since October 2025, sells an optimization editor, an AI writer, a content audit and an AI visibility tracker.
Prices checked on 21 October 2026, in US dollars. The live page showed us euros with the same numbers, so the dollar prices come from a US copy saved on 20 October 2026.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly, per month | Documents | AI prompts tracked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery | $59 | $49 | 120 a year (10 a month) | None |
| Standard | $119 | $99 | 360 a year (30 a month) | 25, ChatGPT only, weekly |
| Pro | $219 | $182 | 360 a year (30 a month) | 50 in five AI engines, daily |
| Peace of Mind | $359 | $299 | “Unlimited”: fair use 500 a month | 100, daily |
| AI Search Analytics | $95 | $82 | None, tracking only | 50, daily |
Why people leave, from the vendor’s pages and reviews:
- Documents are a yearly pool. On the pricing page, 120 and 360 are yearly counts that its script divides by 12 for monthly billing. AI-written and manual drafts share one Content Editor limit, and an unused yearly pool does not roll over.
- The same volume costs more. In October 2025, 30 articles a month came with the Essential plan at $99, or $79 billed yearly. Today that volume means Standard at $119, or $99. Old subscriptions moved to the new plans on 18 May 2026, and coupons stopped applying.
- AI tracking is thin below Pro. Discovery tracks no prompts, and Standard checks ChatGPT once a week. The tracker covers Gemini, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity; Claude is not on that list.
- No backlinks, light keyword research. Surfer’s own comparison with Ahrefs says it “doesn’t offer backlink features” and calls its keyword discovery “lighter by design”. Discovery lacks Keyword Research and the WordPress and Google Docs integrations, and rank tracking is an add-on from $8.50 per 100 keywords a month.
- No money-back guarantee. A 7-day refund for first monthly plans was on the pricing page in October 2025 and is missing from every copy we checked since November 2025. The 7-day trial of Pro needs a card, “does not cancel automatically” and turns into the plan you picked.
- Price complaints. Trustpilot shows 4.2 from 223 reviews (21 October 2026). A two-star review from about 18 October is titled “From €66 to over €230”, and G2’s summary lists “High Pricing” among the cons.

Seven alternatives side by side: price, limits, trials and refunds
Entry plans of seven Surfer SEO competitors, checked on 21 October 2026. SE Ranking and Semrush showed us euros, so their dollar prices come from SE Ranking’s FAQ (21 October) and from the price list in Semrush’s page code (7 October), which matches Semrush’s euro price of 21 October at its exchange rate.
| Tool and entry plan | Monthly | Billed yearly, per month | Writing allowance | AI answer tracking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surfer Discovery, for reference | $59 | $49 | 120 a year (10 a month) | None |
| NeuronWriter Bronze | $23 | $19.17 ($230 a year) | 25 documents* | 5 questions |
| Frase Starter | $49 | $39 | 10 articles a month | 50 prompts daily, ChatGPT and Google AI |
| Scalenut Starter | $59 | $24 on promotion | 5 articles a month, 10 on promotion | 10 prompts weekly, ChatGPT and Google AIO |
| Clearscope Essentials | $129 | Custom plans only | 20 drafts a month | 50 queries, ChatGPT and Gemini |
| MarketMuse Optimize | Not published | Not published | 5 content briefs a month | Not listed |
| SE Ranking Core | $129 | $103.20 | 25 articles* | 100 prompts daily, 4 AI engines |
| Semrush Content Toolkit | $60 | $60 | Unlimited AI articles (10,000 cap), 5 SEO-boosted | Not in this toolkit |
* The plan cards give no period. NeuronWriter’s FAQ says its Content Writer limit “is renewable on a monthly basis”; for SE Ranking we assume a month in the arithmetic below.
| Tool | Free trial | Card to start | Refund |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surfer | 7 days of Pro, then paid | Yes | None; prepaid year recalculated on request |
| NeuronWriter | 7 days on Gold terms | No | First plan, within 30 days |
| Frase | 7 days, capped at 5 articles | No | None, per the terms |
| Scalenut | 7 days | No | None after the trial, per the terms |
| Clearscope | 14 days | Not stated | Not stated; monthly plans cancel anytime |
| MarketMuse | Free plan, 10 queries a month | Not stated | Not on the pricing page |
| SE Ranking | 14 days | No | Only if the service wasn’t delivered |
| Semrush | 7 days | Yes | 7 days, first yearly plan or add-on only |
Trial and refund terms checked on 21 October 2026 on each vendor’s pricing page, terms or help center.
NeuronWriter’s 30-day window on a first plan is the most generous refund here. Four of these tools start without a card, while the Surfer and Semrush trials become paid plans unless you cancel in time.
Cheaper than Surfer per document
Divide each entry plan’s price by its allowance, on yearly billing, and the spread is wide. Discovery works out to $4.90 a document ($588 a year for 120) and Standard to $3.30 ($1,188 for 360).

NeuronWriter Bronze costs $230 a year for 25 documents a month, about $0.77 each, and the bigger plans stay close: Silver comes to $0.75 and Gold to $0.77.
Units differ: Frase and SE Ranking count articles, Writesonic counts AI-written articles, and Clearscope counts drafts at its $129 monthly price, because its yearly plans are custom. Scalenut’s bar uses the promotion that doubles Starter to 10 articles for $24 a month billed yearly; at the $59 list price, 5 articles cost $11.80 each.
Two tools are left off. Semrush’s Content Toolkit allows unlimited AI articles for $60 a month but only 5 “SEO-boosted” pieces, and MarketMuse publishes no prices. At high volume the order changes: Peace of Mind’s fair-use cap of 500 documents a month comes to about $0.60 each on yearly billing.
Content editors: NeuronWriter, Frase and Scalenut
These three replace the editor itself, each with an AI writer and a small AI-answer tracker.
NeuronWriter: the lowest cost per document
NeuronWriter comes from Conti, a Polish company, and says 350,000+ marketers use it.
- Plans: Bronze costs $23 a month or $230 a year for 2 projects, 25 documents and 15,000 AI credits. Gold, at $69 or $690 a year, adds Search Console, WordPress and Shopify integrations, API and MCP access, and unlimited team members.
- AI answers: 5 monitored questions on Bronze. NeuronWriter says its tracker covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity, usually every 24 to 48 hours. The pricing page doesn’t say which of them Bronze gets, and a paid Advanced add-on adds more models.
- Trial and refund: 7 days on Gold terms without a card; when the trial ends, the account is suspended rather than charged. A first plan can be refunded within 30 days.
- Catch: Bronze has read-only sharing and standard AI templates. Trustpilot shows 4.5 from 68 reviews (7 October 2026), below the 4.8 in NeuronWriter’s footer. A one-star review calls its AI posts superficial, and a three-star one says support is slow.

Frase: research, editor and AI tracking on every plan
Frase, which Copysmith bought together with Rytr in 2022 to form Copyrytr, now calls itself “the content operating system for AI search”.
- Price and limits: Starter costs $49 a month or $39 billed yearly for 1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month. Professional, at $129 or $103, gives 3 seats, 5 sites and 40 articles.
- Frase vs Surfer SEO: Frase Starter publishes to WordPress, which Discovery can’t, and also offers research that ends in a brief, separate SEO and GEO scores and Search Console data. Frase supports 70+ languages; Surfer AI writes in 18.
- AI answers: 50 prompts on Starter, tracked daily in ChatGPT and Google AI. Perplexity joins on Professional, and Claude and Gemini on Scale ($239 billed yearly).
- Catch: the terms say “All fees paid are final, and we do not provide any refunds”, and a 7-day money-back line left the pricing page in February 2026. Trustpilot: 3.8 from 64 reviews, 36% of them one-star, including complaints from lifetime-deal owners (7 October 2026).
Our Frase review goes through every plan.

Scalenut: GEO articles on a long-running promotion
Scalenut, a company from Gurugram, India, rebuilt its plans around AI visibility and GEO content early in 2026.
- List price and limits: Starter lists at $59 a month for 1 domain, 5 GEO articles, 5 optimizations of existing articles and 10 prompts. Under the yearly toggle, a “60% OFF Limited Offer” shows $24 a month and doubles the article limits.
- Read the offer: a 60% offer was already there in July 2025, and in February 2026 it was 50%, shown as $354 a year. A Black Friday 2024 FAQ still on the pricing page answers “Are the deals refundable?” with “No.”
- Writer and tracking: Cruise Mode promises a 1,500-plus-word blog post in under 5 minutes. AI answers refresh weekly in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews; Perplexity starts on Professional ($199 list).
- Catch: content audit, internal linking and WordPress publishing start on Plus. The trial needs no card, but the terms rule out refunds after it. Trustpilot: 3.2 from 159 reviews, none in the past 12 months (7 October 2026).

Clearscope and MarketMuse for content teams
Both aim at content teams rather than solo writers.
Clearscope: unlimited seats from $129 a month
Clearscope, run by Mushi Labs of Texas, sells writing, optimization and tracking for Google and AI chatbots.
- Plans: Essentials costs $129 a month for 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts a month; Business is $399. Yearly plans are custom and invoiced.
- What stands out: query tracking in ChatGPT and Gemini on every plan, and a price that fell from $189 in July 2025.
- Clearscope vs Surfer SEO: $129 against $119 for Standard on monthly billing, with unlimited seats instead of 3 but no public yearly discount.
- Trial and terms: a 14-day free trial and “No contracts”; monthly plans cancel without penalty. The pricing page states no refund policy, and Trustpilot shows no reviews of Clearscope (7 October 2026).

MarketMuse: content planning, prices on request
MarketMuse, owned by Siteimprove since October 2024, suggests what to write and how much, aiming at topics where competitors are weak. Its pricing page lists Free, Optimize, Research and Strategy plans with a “Book a demo” button instead of a price.
Free gives 1 user 10 queries a month. Optimize adds 100 tracked topics, 5 content briefs and 100 queries a month; Research gives 3 users unlimited queries and 10 briefs. Its Trustpilot profile is unclaimed, with no reviews (7 October 2026).
SEO suites with an editor: SE Ranking and Semrush
If missing backlinks and rank tracking are your reason to leave, a suite with a content editor replaces two bills with one.
SE Ranking: backlinks, rank tracking and 25 articles
- Price and limits: Core costs $129 a month or $103.20 billed yearly for 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, backlink research, audits of up to 250,000 pages a month and 25 Content Editor articles.
- AI answers: 100 prompts a day across four engines (AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini; Perplexity is tracked in SE Visible, a separate product), the most of any entry plan in this guide.
- Against Surfer Standard: for $4.20 a month more on yearly billing, Core adds backlink research, which Standard doesn’t offer, and 2,000 tracked keywords, which Standard sells as an add-on. You get 25 articles instead of 30 documents.
- Trial and refund: 14 days without a card, limited to 750 keywords and 20 AI prompts a day. After that, “Payments are non-refundable” unless the service wasn’t delivered as promised. Trustpilot: 4.2 from 712 reviews (7 October 2026).

Semrush: a separate Content Toolkit, with or without the SEO plan
Semrush, owned by Adobe since April 2026, sells writing as a separate Content Toolkit.
- Price: $60 a month, monthly or yearly, for topic ideas, briefs, an article generator and draft optimization. The knowledge base promises “unlimited SEO-friendly articles” but 5 “SEO-boosted pieces” a month.
- With SEO data: the SEO plan, with 5 sites, 500 keywords tracked daily and a site audit, costs $139 a month or $117.33 billed yearly, so the pair comes to $177.33 a month on yearly billing.
- Trial and refund: 7 days with a card, charged automatically unless you cancel. The one-time 7-day money-back guarantee covers only first purchases of 12 months or more and first add-ons. Trustpilot: 1.6 from 1,422 reviews (21 October 2026).
For cheaper all-in-one suites, see our Semrush alternatives.
If AI answer tracking is the reason to switch
At Surfer, daily tracking in all five engines starts with Pro at $182 a month billed yearly; a tracking-only AI Search Analytics plan costs $82 a month billed yearly ($95 monthly) for 50 daily prompts.

None of these entry plans tracks Claude; Frase adds it on Scale ($239 billed yearly).
Writesonic: AI tracking first, articles second
- Plans and limits: Starter costs $99 a month or $79 billed yearly for 50 prompts and 50 answers a day in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, plus 15 AI articles a month and 10 site audits of 100 pages each, for 1 user.
- Catch: on 21 October 2026 the pricing page advertised 9 AI platforms, but the other six, including Perplexity and Claude, need Enterprise. Trustpilot: 4.6 from 5,764 reviews (7 October 2026).
- Trial and refund: you can start without a card, and the pricing FAQ promises a “7-day, no-questions-asked refund”.
Our Writesonic review has the details.

Tracking without an editor: Otterly and Peec
Otterly.AI Lite cost $29 a month, or $25 billed yearly, for 15 daily prompts in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot; Claude, Gemini and AI Mode cost extra. Peec AI started at €85 a month for three AI models of your choice. Both prices are from 7 October 2026; our AI visibility tools guide compares them with other trackers.
When to stay with Surfer
- You write at volume. At 500 documents a month, Peace of Mind beats every entry plan in the chart above on cost per document.
- You want editing and daily AI tracking on one bill. Pro ($182 billed yearly) tracks 50 prompts a day in five engines, monitors 200 pages, suggests internal links and, since 5 October 2026, includes MCP access out of beta.
- Your team likes the editor. “The Content Editor is the standout,” wrote a five-star Trustpilot reviewer in February 2026, and another credits the tool with years of better internal linking. G2 shows 4.8 from 546 reviews (archived copy of 17 October 2026).
- You prepaid a year. The fee isn’t refundable and an unused pool doesn’t carry over, so plan the switch for renewal. Subscriptions can’t be paused, and returning customers pay current prices.
How we picked and checked
We started from Google’s US results for “surfer seo alternatives” on 21 October 2026. Most of the top 10 were lists published by competing vendors, plus a Reddit thread about a cheaper alternative. We kept tools that sell an optimization editor or an AI writer with published limits, kept MarketMuse despite its hidden prices, and added Writesonic, Otterly and Peec for AI answers.
We read the pricing pages on 21 October 2026, and terms and help articles on 7 or 21 October; each Trustpilot figure carries its own date. We did not buy these plans, so there are no screenshots from paid accounts and no output-quality scores; see how we test.
We may earn commissions through the Frase, Scalenut, NeuronWriter, Clearscope, SE Ranking, Writesonic, Semrush and MarketMuse links. Surfer, MarketMuse, Semrush, Otterly and Peec get no buttons here.

FAQ
For a like-for-like swap, Frase Starter: $39 a month billed yearly for 10 articles, 50 AI prompts tracked daily and publishing to WordPress. For the lowest cost per optimized document on an entry plan, NeuronWriter Bronze at about $0.77. For backlinks, rank tracking and 25 articles in one plan, SE Ranking Core at $103.20 billed yearly.
Not for regular work. MarketMuse has a free plan with 10 queries a month, and Semrush a free account with 10 reports a day. Trials without a card: NeuronWriter, Frase, Scalenut and Writesonic for 7 days, SE Ranking for 14. Frase caps its trial at 5 articles, and NeuronWriter suspends the account instead of charging it.
For a solo writer on Discovery, the value is thin: $49 a month billed yearly buys 120 documents a year, with no AI tracking, keyword research or WordPress integration. Teams writing at volume get more: Peace of Mind allows up to 500 documents a month for $299 billed yearly, and Pro adds daily tracking in five AI engines for $182.
A trial, yes: 7 days of Pro for new accounts, with a card, turning into the plan you chose unless you cancel. A money-back guarantee, no: the 7-day refund seen in October 2025 is gone. A prepaid year isn’t refundable, but support can recalculate the fee by months started or limits used and refund the difference if it agrees.
SE Ranking Core tracks the most: 100 prompts a day across four engines (AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini; Perplexity is tracked in SE Visible, a separate product). Frase Starter and Writesonic Starter track 50 a day, Clearscope Essentials 50 queries in ChatGPT and Gemini, Scalenut Starter 10 a week and NeuronWriter Bronze 5 questions. Semrush’s Content Toolkit has no AI tracking, and MarketMuse lists none on its plans.
It is shown with yearly billing. The $24 sits under the Annual toggle as a “60% OFF Limited Offer” on Starter, with article limits doubled to 10. Month to month, Starter lists at $59 with 5 articles. The offer has run in some form since at least July 2025, so we treat $59 as the list price.
