Surfer SEO helps you write and refresh pages; Ahrefs measures whole domains: backlinks, keywords and technical health. Prices on 21 October 2026: Surfer from $49 a month billed yearly, Ahrefs Lite $129 a month.

Short answer

  • Writing or updating articles: Surfer. Discovery gives 120 documents a year for $49 a month billed yearly; not for link building.
  • Link building, site audits, competitor research: Ahrefs Lite at $129 a month; writers pay $99 more for its editor.
  • Both jobs: Discovery plus Lite cost $156.50 a month billed yearly.

Ahrefs vs Surfer SEO: what each tool is for

The two tools answer different questions. Surfer looks at one page and at the pages that outrank it, then tells you what to add. Ahrefs looks at whole domains: who links to them, which keywords they rank for and what its crawler finds broken on your site.

Surfer co-founder and CMO Tomasz Niezgoda said much the same in July 2025. His tool “doesn’t offer backlink features”, its keyword research is “lighter by design”, and Ahrefs still leads in keyword research, backlinks, technical SEO and ad monitoring. Since January 2026 Surfer’s AI Tracker has offered paid placements through a Backlink Marketplace, but it still shows no link data.

Prices checked on 21 October 2026 on both pricing pages and help centres.

Surfer has no link data and no ads data, and its own comparison table rates technical SEO “Not a focus”. Ahrefs does have an editor, but every account gets just 1 document a month; more sits under “Optional add-ons”, from $99.

Prices and plan limits in US dollars

Both vendors showed us euros. Dollar prices come from a US copy of surferseo.com/pricing saved on 20 October 2026 and from the other vendor’s own dollar page. “Yearly” is the monthly rate when the year is paid upfront.

Surfer plans: documents counted per year

PlanMonthlyYearlyDocumentsAlso included
Discovery$59$49120 a year (10 a month)10 tracked pages, 1 seat, no AI tracking
Standard$119$99360 a year (30 a month)Keyword research, integrations, 25 prompts weekly, 3 seats
Pro$219$182360 a year (30 a month)50 prompts daily, Topical Map, Audit, 5 seats
Peace of Mind$359$299“Unlimited”, fair use 500 a monthSERP Analyzer, API, 10 seats
AI Search Analytics$95$82None50 prompts daily, tracking only

The plan cards show yearly pools. Switch the page to monthly billing and its script divides each count by 12. The pricing FAQ confirms that on an annual plan “Your credits reset yearly”.

On yearly billing the whole pool arrives upfront, so a busy month can borrow from a quiet one, but nothing rolls over into the next year. AI-written drafts and hand-written documents come out of the same allowance. WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful and Zapier integrations start on Standard.

Every plan also lists an AI Detector & Humanizer. The humanizer rewrites AI text so it reads as if a person wrote it, works in English only and is capped at 50,000 words a month under fair use. We note it as a listed feature, not a reason to buy.

No plan includes a rank tracker: it is a monthly add-on, from $8.50 for every 100 keywords and cheaper per keyword in bigger packages. Until early 2026 the cheapest plan was Essential at $99, or $79 billed yearly; older subscribers were moved onto the new plans on 18 May 2026.

Advanced$449$374.175,0001.5 million
EnterpriseAnnual contract only$1,499From 10,000From 5 million

A prepaid year costs the same as 10 monthly payments, which is where “save up to 17%” comes from. Lite includes 1 user, with up to 2 more at $40 a month each, and 5 projects for sites you can’t verify as yours; verified sites are unlimited.

Below Lite sit a $29 Starter plan, billed monthly only, and Ahrefs Free for sites you own. Beyond 1 free document a month, the editor is extra: AI Content Helper costs $99 a month for 50 documents, and the $299 Content Kit raises that to 250 and adds an AI Content Grader.

Extra users are charged automatically unless prepaid, and so are pay-as-you-go credits once you switch them on. At least one comparison in the current top 10 still quotes $99 as the entry price, a plan price that no longer exists.

Entry plans: price a month, monthly vs yearly billing. US dollars; pricing pages checked 21 Oct 2026. Yearly = the whole year paid upfront.
Paid upfront, a year of Discovery costs $588, Lite $1,290 and Semrush SEO about $1,408. All three take roughly a sixth off for the prepaid year.

What one document and one tracked keyword cost

These are our sums from the tables above, assuming you use the whole allowance.

UnitSurferAhrefs
Editor document, entry level$5.90 on Discovery monthly, $4.90 yearly$1.98 with the $99 editor add-on
Editor document, larger plan$3.97 on Standard monthly, $3.30 yearly$1.20 with the $299 Content Kit
100 tracked keywords a monthUp to $8.50 with the add-on, daily$17.20 if all of Lite’s price is counted, weekly

The add-on editor wins on price per document, but the documents differ. A Surfer document can be a full AI draft, which the vendor expects to run to at least 2,000 words, written in about 20 minutes in one of 18 languages.

Ahrefs describes its add-on as an editor that grades a draft against top-ranking pages, with in-line AI for rewrites, in “173+ languages”. We didn’t compare output, so read the document rows as price only.

The keyword row runs the other way. The add-on tracker is cheaper and refreshes daily, while Lite’s 750 keywords come bundled with the backlink index, Keywords Explorer and Site Audit. Its $17.20 is an upper bound, not a fair per-keyword price.

Two bar charts. Editor documents a month: Surfer Discovery 10, Surfer Standard 30, Ahrefs editor add-on 50 for $99, any Ahrefs account 1. Rank-tracker keywords included: Surfer plans 0, Ahrefs Lite 750 weekly, Ahrefs Standard 2,000 weekly, Semrush SEO 500 daily
The entry money buys documents at Surfer and tracked keywords at Ahrefs; each sells the other half separately. Semrush SEO is the only one of the three whose base plan refreshes rankings daily.

Both now track how AI answers mention a brand, and both meter it by prompts.

  • Surfer: nothing on Discovery; 25 prompts weekly in ChatGPT only on Standard; 50 daily on Pro across Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode; 100 on Peace of Mind.
  • Claude isn’t among the five, although the site header promises visibility there too.
  • Its tracking-only plan, AI Search Analytics, costs $95 a month for 50 daily prompts, or $82 billed yearly.
  • Ahrefs: Lite includes 150 prompt checks a month, which is 5 prompts checked daily on one platform.
  • More capacity comes in packages of $50, $100 and $250 a month; Brand Radar AI, which searches a database of 493 million+ prompts, starts at $199.

Since 5 October Surfer’s tracker has also suggested off-page moves such as “buying a mention” in the sources AI answers cite. For more trackers, see our AI visibility tools comparison.

Three buyers, three answers

A solo writer or blogger

Buy Discovery if you publish up to 10 articles a month and research keywords elsewhere. It costs $49 a month billed yearly or $59 monthly, with 1 seat and 10 tracked pages. Move to Standard ($99 yearly, $119 monthly) when you want keyword research, WordPress or Google Docs integration, or 30 documents a month.

For links and keywords on your own site, add Ahrefs Free. It shows up to 1,000 backlinks and keywords at a time and gives 5,000 audit crawl credits a month per project, but only on sites you verify as yours. Competitors stay out of reach until you pay.

An agency with several clients

Here the data comes first: backlink audits, competitor research and rank reports for clients. Lite is tight for that, with 1 user (up to 2 more at $40 each) and 5 unverified projects. Standard ($249, or $207.50 yearly) raises this to 20 projects and 2,000 keywords, adds Content Explorer and allows up to 5 extra users at $60.

Then add Surfer for the writers. Its Standard plan has 3 seats and 30 documents a month; Pro has 5 seats, 5 brand workspaces and daily AI tracking. For 40 or more pieces a month, the only plan with a published price that fits is Peace of Mind ($299 yearly), because the plans below stop at 30; Enterprise is quoted on request.

A SaaS marketer on one domain

If rankings slip because of crawl errors or a thin link profile, Lite’s Site Audit and backlink index address it. If older articles have decayed, Content Audit reads your Search Console data daily and flags pages that dropped; Standard tracks 50 pages and Pro 200.

For AI answers, compare prompt counts before features. Pro checks 50 prompts a day across five engines for $182 a month billed yearly; Lite checks 5.

When you need both, and what the pair costs

Surfer’s own comparison answers the which-one question with “Use both–if you can”, and the tables above agree. The overlap is small: keyword research, some auditing, AI tracking and, through add-ons, editing and rank tracking. Here is what common setups cost on monthly billing.

SetupA monthWhat you get
Surfer Discovery + Ahrefs Free$5910 documents; link data for your own verified sites
Surfer Discovery + Ahrefs Lite$188Adds competitor backlinks, 750 weekly keywords and site audits
Ahrefs Lite + its editor add-on$228One login and 50 documents; sharing drafts needs Enterprise
Surfer Standard + Ahrefs Lite$24830 documents, keyword research and 25 weekly AI prompts
SE Ranking Core, one tool$12925 editor articles and 2,000 keywords tracked daily (7 October prices)

On yearly billing the Discovery and Lite pair costs $156.50 a month: $49 plus $107.50. Two cheaper routes exist.

SE Ranking Core puts an editor and daily rank tracking in one subscription, with a 14-day trial and no card. Mangools has no draft editor, but its SEO-only Basic ($29.90 a month billed yearly; 200 weekly keywords, 100,000 backlink rows a month) can stand in for Lite next to Discovery: $78.90 a month for the pair. Our guide to cheaper Ahrefs alternatives compares both, and the SE Ranking review covers its plans.

What changes if you compare Surfer with Semrush instead

Swap in Semrush and the logic holds. It is another data suite, owned by Adobe since 28 April 2026, and its content tools also sit outside the entry plan.

Trustpilot4.2 from 223 reviews1.6 from 1,422 reviews2.1 from 324 reviews

For an editor buyer, the main difference is rank tracking: Semrush’s entry plan refreshes 500 keywords every day, where Lite refreshes 750 once a week.

Semrush lists content optimization from Pro+ at $299 a month ($248.17 yearly). Its separate Content Toolkit was priced at $60 a month in the pricing-page code on 7 October 2026. The SEO plan also “doesn’t include the full AI visibility feature set”: prompt tracking starts with Starter at $199.

Pro and Guru are gone from the pricing page, and Advanced is now quoted on request. If daily rankings matter most, Semrush SEO fits better for $10 more a month. The two suites publish index sizes that count different things, 35 trillion history records on one side and 43 trillion+ backlinks on the other (Semrush, 21 October), so we don’t rank their data. Our Semrush alternatives guide has more, and the pricing page shows today’s numbers.

Surfer’s trial needs a card and turns into the plan you picked after 7 days. The trial help article warns that “The trial does not cancel automatically”, and it is for new accounts only.

A 7-day money-back guarantee was on the pricing page on 7 October 2025 and gone by 2 November. A prepaid year is “not refundable”, though the regulations let you ask support to recalculate it by months started or limits used, whichever is higher.

Ahrefs offers no trial at all; its pricing FAQ answers the question with “We never run discounts” and points to the free account. On a monthly plan you can ask for a refund if you haven’t used the service, but it may refuse “if we see any material activity”.

Surfer’s footer badge shows 4.6 for Trustpilot, above the 4.2 on the profile itself. A German customer’s review from about 18 October is titled “From €66 to over €230”.

Half of the suite’s 324 Trustpilot reviews give one star. One from 31 May 2026 describes “constant restrictions called ‘Suspicious activity'” on a $250-a-month plan, and one from 29 September doubts the precision of its traffic estimates.

Who should buy Surfer, and who should buy Ahrefs

Buy Surfer if…

  • you publish or refresh articles every week and want each draft scored against the pages that rank;
  • writers, editors and clients need share links, comments and Google Docs or WordPress integration (Standard and up);
  • you want AI-answer tracking next to the editor: 50 prompts daily across five engines on Pro.

See the editor plans and limits

We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page.

Skip Surfer if…

  • you need backlink or ads data, because it has neither;
  • you want a trial without a card, or a refund window;
  • you need AI drafts in a language outside the 18 it writes in.

For cheaper editors, two of them with card-free trials, see our comparison of three content editors. For tools built for both Google and AI answers, browse our AI SEO tools list.

Buy Ahrefs if…

  • links decide rankings in your niche and you need competitors’ backlink profiles;
  • you research keywords at scale or audit large sites (Lite crawls up to 25,000 pages per project);
  • you want competitors’ paid keywords and ad history.

The plans page lists today’s prices. The company runs no affiliate program, so this link earns us nothing.

Skip Ahrefs if…

  • you mostly write and only need data on your own site: the free account covers that;
  • you need daily rank updates, because every plan refreshes weekly by default;
  • you want to try before you pay: there is no trial and no discount.

How we compared them

For this Surfer SEO vs Ahrefs comparison we read both pricing pages, help docs, terms, product pages and changelogs on 21 October 2026. We also checked archived copies of the editor’s pricing page back to January 2025. Every figure is logged with a quote, a link and the date. One vendor shows identical numbers in euros and dollars; the other doesn’t (€119 against $129 for Lite).

We have no paid accounts with either tool. We didn’t write drafts, run audits or compare data accuracy, so nothing here rates output quality. Links to the editor’s pricing page may earn us a commission later; the data suite pays no commissions, and the Semrush link is a plain one. More in how we test and our editorial transparency policy.

FAQ

Is Surfer SEO cheaper than Ahrefs?

Against Lite, yes. Discovery costs $49 a month billed yearly or $59 monthly, against $107.50 or $129 for Lite. The $29 Starter plan costs less, but it is billed monthly only and takes no add-ons. Discovery gives 10 editor documents a month and no backlink data; Lite tracks 750 keywords weekly and includes the backlink index and Site Audit.

Does Surfer have backlink data or a site audit?

It has no backlink data. In July 2025 the company’s own comparison said it “doesn’t offer backlink features”; since January 2026 its AI Tracker has a Backlink Marketplace for buying placements, not for studying links. Content Audit reads your Search Console data daily, with ranking-drop alerts from Standard, and an Audit tool starts on Pro. For site crawls and backlink profiles, use Ahrefs or Semrush.

Does Ahrefs have a content editor?

Yes. Every account, free or paid, gets 1 AI Content Helper document a month (Enterprise 5). The tool grades a draft against top-ranking pages; 50 documents cost $99 a month as an add-on, and Content Kit, at $299, gives 250 and adds an AI Content Grader. Inviting teammates to the same document is “Available for Enterprise accounts only”.

How many documents a month does Discovery include?

Ten a month on monthly billing, or a pool of 120 for the year on yearly billing. The plan cards show 120 and 360 because they count per year, and the page’s script divides by 12 when you switch to monthly. Standard and Pro allow 30 a month, and Peace of Mind 500 under fair use.

Which one has a free trial or a free plan?

Surfer gives new accounts 7 days of its Pro plan, but you enter a card and the plan you chose starts automatically. Ahrefs has no trial; its free account works only on sites you verify as yours, with 5,000 crawl credits a month per project. Semrush offers 7 days, also billed automatically unless you cancel in time.

Which tracks AI answers, and how often?

Both, but not on every plan. Discovery tracks nothing, Standard checks 25 prompts weekly in ChatGPT, and Pro checks 50 daily in five engines, without Claude. Ahrefs Lite includes 150 checks a month, or 5 prompts a day, and Brand Radar AI starts at $199. Mangools’ SEO + AI bundle, from $37.70 a month billed yearly, covers eight systems, Claude included, once a week.

Surfer or Semrush for content writing?

Surfer, if writing is the main job: every writing plan includes the Content Editor, from $49 a month billed yearly. Semrush puts content optimization in Pro+ at $299 a month or sells a separate Content Toolkit. It is the better buy when you also want keyword research, competitor data and Site Audit in one tool, with 500 keywords refreshed daily for $139.

Can you get a refund from either tool?

Rarely. Surfer dropped its 7-day money-back guarantee in late 2025, and a prepaid year is “not refundable”, though support may recalculate it. Ahrefs “does not issue refunds in general” and may refuse a monthly refund if your account shows activity. Semrush gives a one-time 7-day refund only on a first plan of 12 months or longer.
