Best SEO Tools for Small Business in 2026: By Budget, Local SEO Included

By YourAISoft Team · Prices checked 7 October 2026 · How we test

A small business can start with free tools from Google and Bing, then add one paid plan. On 7 October 2026, the entry plans we compared cost $17 to $139.95 a month, billed monthly.

Our pick: SE Ranking Core, $103.20 a month billed yearly ($129 monthly), handles keyword tracking, site audits and local listings for up to three locations. Skip it if you only need Google Maps rankings: Whitespark tracks those for $17 a month. On a tight budget, add Mangools Basic ($29.90 a month, billed yearly) to the free tools.

Our picks and what they cost

For a small business, choose by the job, not the brand. Keyword research, site health and your Google Maps listing are separate jobs, and two small tools plus the free kit often cover them for less than one suite.

Prices checked on 7 October 2026 on each vendor’s pricing page, in US dollars.

Semrush’s help center lists Local Base at “$30 monthly per location”, and the pricing page’s own price data sets the same $30 for monthly and yearly billing. SE Ranking, Semrush and Yoast showed us euros, so their dollar prices come from copies of the same pages archived on 4–6 October 2026.

Entry plan price, billed month to month. US dollars per month. Prices checked 7 Oct 2026
Month-to-month prices on 7 October 2026. Billed yearly, nine of these ten cost less; Ahrefs Starter is sold month to month only.

How we read the table: SE Ranking Core is the only plan here that covers keyword research, site audits and local listings in one subscription. For one location, Mangools Basic plus Whitespark’s tracker costs $43.90 a month billed yearly, under half the price of SE Ranking Core, but without audits or listing management.

Free SEO tools: the $0 starter kit

Set these up first. The first three come straight from Google and Bing; the rest cover audits and keyword checks without a bill.

  • Google Search Console. The Performance report shows clicks and impressions for the past three months by default, and URL Inspection shows crawl and index data “directly from the Google index”. You don’t need it to appear in Google, but it shows how Google sees your site.
  • Google Business Profile. You control how the business appears on Maps and Search at no charge, post photos and answer reviews. The catch is eligibility: “Only businesses that make face-to-face contact with customers are eligible for a Business Profile.”
  • Bing Webmaster Tools. In February 2026 it added an AI Performance report, launched as a public preview, that counts how often Microsoft Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries cite your pages. You see citations, cited pages and a sample of query phrases, but not your position inside an answer.
  • Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. No card and no time limit. Once you verify the site, you get Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits a month per project and Site Explorer with 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once.
  • Screaming Frog SEO Spider. Crawls up to 500 URLs free; a licence for bigger sites costs $279 a year per user.
  • Yoast SEO for WordPress. The free plugin has 10+ million active installations, and its bulk editor for titles and meta descriptions costs nothing.
  • Mangools free plan. No card: 5 keyword lookups per 24 hours, each with 15 related and 5 competitor keywords. Enough to size up a few keywords, not to plan a site.
  • AthenaHQ free plan. $25 of free credit, or 300 credits at one credit per AI response, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot. It shows whether AI answers mention your business before you pay for tracking.

The free kit is thin on three jobs: finding new keywords at volume, tracking rankings city by city, and keeping listings consistent across directories. The paid tools below fill those gaps.

Under $50 a month: affordable SEO tools for keywords and content

Local tools in this price range (Whitespark, Moz Local, Semrush Local, BrightLocal and Localo) are compared in the local SEO section. Here are the keyword and content picks.

Mangools Basic: keyword research on a small budget

Mangools sells one bundle of six tools: KWFinder for keyword research, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher for rankings, LinkMiner for backlinks, SiteProfiler and AI Search Watcher. The tools aren’t sold separately. Basic costs $49 a month, or $358.80 a year ($29.90 a month). It tracks 200 keywords with weekly updates at city level and allows 100 keyword lookups per 24 hours.

Two details matter. The pricing page opens on the SEO + AI bundle, where Basic is $61 a month or $37.70 billed yearly; the SEO-only Basic is the $49 plan, behind a separate switch. And the tool list has no site audit, so pair it with Screaming Frog or Ahrefs Free. Mangools rates 4.5 on Trustpilot from 167 reviews.

Skip it if you need daily rank updates, which only the Agency plan has, or a second user: Basic includes no extra seats.

NeuronWriter Bronze: for businesses that publish articles

NeuronWriter is a content optimization editor with an AI writer, and it pitches Bronze “for business owner improving SEO & AI rankings”. Bronze costs $23 a month or $19 billed yearly for 2 projects, 25 content analyses, 5 tracked AI questions and 15,000 AI credits. The 7-day trial runs on Gold-plan terms with no card, and the account isn’t charged when it ends.

The limits: Search Console, WordPress and Shopify integrations and the API start on Gold, at $69 a month or $57 billed yearly. Refunds cover the first plan you buy, within 30 days. Trustpilot: 4.5 from 68 reviews. To weigh other content tools, see our Scalenut vs Surfer SEO vs Frase comparison.

Also under $50

  • Ahrefs Starter, $29 a month. 200 credits a month for keyword and competitor lookups, renewed monthly only. Ahrefs warns that “features and limits on this plan may be changed without prior notice”.
  • Ubersuggest Individual, US$29 a month. Billed yearly, the pricing page showed €16 a month (€192 a year) on 7 October 2026. It covers 1 project, 125 keywords tracked weekly and up to 20 locations. The one-time 7-day free trial applies to monthly subscriptions only. Read the lifetime terms under billing traps first.
  • Yoast SEO Premium, $118.80 a year before VAT, about $9.90 a month. One subscription covers one WordPress site and includes the Local SEO plugin for location pages, opening hours, a store locator and Google Maps embeds.

$100 to $150 a month: one tool for SEO and local

SE Ranking Core: our pick for one site and up to three locations

Core costs $129 a month, or $103.20 a month on a yearly plan paid upfront. It includes 10 projects, 2,000 keywords and 100 AI prompts tracked daily, and site audits of 250,000 pages a month. On the current plans, introduced in February 2026, the local module is included: 3 locations, a local and map rank tracker for 1,500 keywords, and listing management in 100+ directories. Extra locations cost from $18.40.

That change raised the entry price. In January 2026 the cheapest plan was still Essential at $65 a month with 500 tracked keywords, so a review quoting $65 predates the switch. In December 2025, local SEO cost $9 to $23 a month extra. One 1-star Trustpilot review from June 2026 is titled “Migrated—without my consent—to a significantly more expensive plan”. Overall, SE Ranking rates 4.2 on Trustpilot from 712 reviews.

Before you buy it for Business Profile posts, check one mismatch: the plan table lists “GBP posts”, while SE Ranking’s local marketing page marks its post scheduler “Coming soon”.

Skip it if one location and keyword data are all you need: Mangools Basic costs less than a third as much billed yearly. If two people must work at once, budget for an extra manager seat (from $16): Core includes 1, and one login allows one active session.

Semrush SEO: the bigger suite at a higher price

Semrush, owned by Adobe since April 2026, charges $139.95 a month for its SEO plan (the pricing page rounds it to $139), or $117.33 billed yearly, for 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily. Against SE Ranking Core, that is a quarter of the tracked keywords and no local module for $10.95 more a month ($14.13 more billed yearly).

Local SEO is a separate toolkit: Local Base adds $30 a month per location. Tracking several locations or devices in the SEO toolkit takes Pro+ at $299, and AI visibility tracking starts with Starter at $199 or the separate AI Visibility Toolkit at $99. The trial needs a card, and Semrush rates 1.7 on Trustpilot from 1,411 reviews.

Local SEO software: profiles, listings and map rankings

Local SEO tools do three different jobs. They run your Google Business Profile (posts, photos, review replies), keep your name, address and phone consistent across directories, and track where you appear on the map across a grid of points. The tools split these jobs differently, and most price by the number of locations.

Coverage differs by country: Moz Local manages listings only in the US, UK and Canada, BrightLocal works in those three plus Australia, and Whitespark’s Citation Finder covers 43 countries. Whitespark counts “location keywords”: one keyword in one city is one, so 10 keywords in 3 cities use 30 of the plan’s 100.

Three locations: monthly cost of the entry plan. US dollars per month for a business with 3 locations. Prices checked 7 Oct 2026
Three locations, monthly prices on 7 October 2026: per-location pricing triples Moz Local Lite to $60 and Semrush Local Base to $90, while Whitespark’s $17 plan covers any number of locations within 100 location keywords.

Which one fits:

  • Listings in a mess, one shop in the US, UK or Canada: Moz Local Lite, $20 a month or $199 a year. “Each physical location you need to manage in Moz Local will require its own subscription.”
  • You only want to see where you rank: Whitespark Local Rank Tracker, $17 a month or $14 billed yearly with weekly checks; daily checks cost $25, or $20 billed yearly.
  • Audits plus tracking: BrightLocal Track, $41 a month or $369 a year for one location and $62 a month for two to five, with a 14-day trial and no card. New citations are paid separately.
  • Profile on autopilot: Semrush Local Base posts and answers reviews through an AI agent, priced per location. Localo Single Business, $49 a month or $39 billed yearly plus VAT, adds a weekly profile audit scored 0–100%, but it has only 37 Trustpilot reviews so far.
  • Website SEO and local in one account: SE Ranking Core, covered above.

SEO tools for beginners: the 80/20 setup

The 80/20 rule in SEO is the idea that a few tasks bring most of the results. For a small business site, these are the tasks, in order, before you buy anything advanced.

  1. Complete your Business Profile if you meet customers in person. BrightLocal’s February 2026 survey report cites the company’s own recent research: “just 35% of SMBs have a Google Business Profile”, so a complete profile already sets you apart.
  2. Verify the site in Search Console and fix the pages Google reports as not indexed.
  3. Pick a short list of keywords that each main page can answer, using Mangools’ free lookups or a paid keyword tool.
  4. Rewrite titles and meta descriptions on those pages; on WordPress, Yoast’s free bulk editor handles this.
  5. Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to every one in your profile.
  6. Check Search Console monthly. Google suggests looking “around once every month” and emails you when it finds new issues.

For a first paid tool, Mangools keeps the risk low: a free plan without a card, one bundle instead of tools sold one by one, and a full refund within 48 hours of paying for Basic.

Yes, especially for local searches. In Whitespark’s May 2025 study of 540 searches in Houston, Phoenix and Denver across six industries, an AI Overview appeared on 15% of purely local searches, while the local pack appeared more than 90% of the time. Informational searches were different: AI Overviews showed on 92% of them, and on 97% of hybrid searches such as “average cost of dental implants in Phoenix”.

Customers do ask AI about local businesses. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found that 45% had used ChatGPT or other generative AI for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. Google’s share as a source of reviews fell from 83% to 71%.

Maps is changing too. On 12 March 2026, Google launched Ask Maps in the US and India: you ask a question in plain language, and Maps answers from data on more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors.

The work behind all of this is the same. Google states there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode”, and Search Console counts that traffic together with regular results, in the Performance report under the “Web” search type. To see AI citations directly, use Bing’s free AI Performance report, AthenaHQ’s free credits or SE Ranking Core’s 100 daily AI prompts. More tools are in our SEO and GEO reviews.

Billing traps to check before you pay

Each item below comes from the vendor’s own pricing page or terms as of 7 October 2026.

  • Semrush: the trial takes a card, and “your first payment will be charged automatically at the end of the trial period unless you cancel beforehand”. Under its refund policy, only a first yearly subscription or a first add-on can be refunded, within 7 days; month-to-month plans can’t.
  • SE Ranking: “Payments are non-refundable, except in cases where the service wasn’t delivered as promised”, and yearly plans are billed upfront.
  • Ubersuggest: a “Save 90% off with lifetime access. Offer ends soon!” banner sits on the pricing page. Lifetime purchases “are final and non-refundable”, switching to lifetime keeps only your oldest project, and premium AI features cost a monthly add-on.
  • Localo: “Renewals happen automatically on your billing date without additional notifications.” The same page labels the yearly discount three ways: “2 months free”, “20%” and “-40% forever”. The listed prices work out to about 20%. Localo does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on all plans.
  • BrightLocal: a downgrade applies at once with no refund for the rest of the period, and new citations cost extra: from $3.20 per site, or $2 with bulk credits.
  • Moz Local: no trial on the pricing page, and every physical location needs its own subscription. On 7 October a banner offered savings of “up to 40%” that “ends today”, so confirm the price at checkout.
  • Mangools: a full refund only “within 48 hours of your payment”, and subscriptions renew until you turn auto-renewal off.
  • Yoast: refunds within 30 days apply to the first purchase only; renewals and monthly subscriptions aren’t refundable.

When to skip the tools and hire help

  • Online-only businesses. Without face-to-face customers you can’t have a Business Profile, so profile and listing tools such as Moz Local, BrightLocal, Localo and Semrush Local add little. The free kit plus Mangools or SE Ranking fits better.
  • Brochure sites that won’t grow. If you won’t add pages, the free kit covers you; a paid keyword tool pays off when you publish new pages.
  • Owners with no time for the work. A tool shows what to fix; someone still has to fix it. BrightLocal sells a done-for-you Managed SEO service at $1,299 a month, and Whitespark builds listings for a one-time $20 to $999. Get a local agency’s quote to compare before you decide.

How we compared these tools, and what we could not check

On 7 October 2026 we read each vendor’s pricing page, plan limits, and trial and refund terms, and checked Trustpilot ratings the same day. We did not use these tools in our own accounts for this guide, so the page describes plans and terms rather than results. The criteria behind our reviews are on the How we test page.

Gaps we could not close: for Ubersuggest we quote the US$29 monthly price and the €16 yearly rate as its pricing page displayed them, and we left out G2 ratings because G2’s pages did not open for us. The dollar-price caveat for SE Ranking, Semrush and Yoast is under the first table.

Buttons on this page go to SE Ranking, Mangools and NeuronWriter, which run affiliate programs; if you buy through them, we may earn a commission. None of the other tools compared on this page pays us, and an affiliate program doesn’t change where a tool lands in this guide. Details are in our editorial and transparency policy.

FAQ

What are the best SEO tools for a small business?

Five cover most needs. Google Search Console and Google Business Profile are free. SE Ranking Core ($103.20 a month billed yearly) handles keywords, audits and local listings for up to three locations. Mangools Basic ($29.90 a month billed yearly) covers keyword research, and Whitespark’s tracker ($14 a month billed yearly) covers map rankings. All three paid picks can be tried first.

Can I do SEO for my small business for free?

Yes, for the basics. Google Search Console, Google Business Profile and Bing Webmaster Tools are free. Ahrefs Free adds a site audit and backlink data once you verify the site, and Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs at no cost. What you give up is keyword research at volume and rank tracking city by city.

How much should a small business spend on SEO tools?

Start at $0 and add one paid plan when the free tools stop answering your questions. On 7 October 2026, local tools for one location started at $14 a month billed yearly and keyword tools at $29 a month billed monthly (Ahrefs Starter, Ubersuggest Individual), while all-in-one plans cost more than $100. Done-for-you local SEO, such as BrightLocal’s Managed SEO, costs $1,299 a month.

Is SEO dead now that AI answers questions?

No. In Whitespark’s 2025 study, AI Overviews appeared on 15% of purely local searches but on 92% of informational ones, while the map pack showed on more than 90% of local searches. Google says pages need no special optimization to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so the basics still count: an indexable site, a complete Business Profile and steady customer reviews.

What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?

It’s the idea that a small share of the work brings most of the results. For a local business, that share is usually a complete Business Profile, a site Google can crawl and index, a short list of target keywords on the main pages, and a steady flow of reviews. Paid tools come after those basics.

Which SEO tools have a free trial without a credit card?

On 7 October 2026, SE Ranking (14 days), BrightLocal (14 days), Localo (14 days) and NeuronWriter (7 days on Gold-plan terms) said no card is needed. Mangools offers a free plan instead of a trial. Semrush’s 7-day trial needs a card and charges automatically when it ends unless you cancel.

Do I need a local SEO tool for one location?

Not at first. Your Business Profile is free and handles posts, photos and reviews. A paid tool earns its cost when you want to fix listings across directories: Moz Local Lite costs $199 a year (Moz shows it as $16 a month), in the US, UK and Canada. To track your map rankings, Whitespark’s Local Rank Tracker costs $14 a month billed yearly.
